Mémoire Artificielle
2024
Espace M, Rennes FR
A foundational experience involved generating a fake Master's thesis entirely produced by ChatGPT, prior to writing my actual Master's thesis in fine arts. What initially appeared to be a technical or playful gesture quickly revealed itself to be conceptually charged—exposing the flaws, illusions, and subtle shifts that can arise from a naïve use of artificial intelligence in the context of artistic creation.

A French play on words: mémoire in the feminine form means "memory," while in the masculine, it refers to a "thesis"—specifically, a Master’s thesis. So, mémoire artificielle (with the feminine adjective artificielle) translates as "artificial memory," whereas mémoire artificiel (with the masculine artificiel) means "artificial thesis."

This project questions not only the role of the author, but also opens up the notion of the meta-author: a reflective position from which the author observes, questions, and replays their own authority through layers of citation, simulation, and repetition. Reflecting on one's own project through a prior artificial production gives rise to a critical stance, where writing itself becomes a material to be analyzed.
